Just a reminder that Kindergarten Progress Reports will go home on November 17. We look forward to seeing you at Parent-Teacher Interviews on November 8th. (Please note that Kindergarten teachers are meeting with the students of their HOMEROOM class only.
Halloween is fast approaching! It is an exciting event, but we ask for your cooperation with the following:
Costumes are permitted for Kindergarten students as we will parade through the school to show them to the older classes. However, any accessories should be left at home(i.e. princess wands or swords - no weapons). Please do not send your child in face make-up as it gets everywhere as they play. Please have your child wearing play clothes underneath their costumes (or in their bags) as they may wish to remove their costumes after our parade. Please note that we are unable to distribute food treats of any kind due to Board Allergy and Health Policies. Should you wish to send something in with your child (optional and most do not.), it must be a non-food item. There are 28 students in our class. Grades 1-6 will wear black and orange. Please do not send in Halloween candy for snack or lunch desserts. We are teaching students about healthy eating and would prefer that you keep any candy at home for a treat after school. Your children will be introduced to the letters and sounds of the alphabet using the Jolly Phonics Program. For each sound there is an action which helps the children remember the sound the letter makes. The letters are not introduced in alphabetical order. They have been carefully selected to help the learning process.
I have sent home a sheet with the first group of letters and sounds we have learned for you to practise at home with your child. As we finish learning about a group of letters/sounds/actions I will send home the group sheet for you to practise at home with your child. At home have your child say the letter name and sound using the action picture. Ask your child to make the letter in the air or find it in a book during nightly reading with you. For those students who already know letters and sounds you can extend the activity to reading and spelling the word for the action picture or writing a story about the picture. Thank you for your at home support! Ms. Landry With the cooler temperatures in the morning, please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately. We stay outside for outdoor learning first thing in the mornings every day so a warm jacket, splash pants, a hat, and even mittens may be needed to help keep your child warm.
St. James is collecting canned foods for the Shepherds of Good Hope from Oct. 2 - 13. If possible, please bring in a canned food to donate. Thank You!
Quiet Time blankets will be sent home at the end of each month (once a month) to be washed. Please make sure to return your child's blanket back to school after it is washed so your child has it for Quiet Time.
St. James will be participating in the Terry Fox Run. Our students will walk/run on Tuesday, Sept. 26 2017 from 9:30-10:00 am. We are asking for a small donation of $2 (aka- A Toonie for Terry) towards the Terry Fox Foundation. Kindergarten students will walk on school grounds. If you are able to volunteer, please write a note in your child’s agenda. Everyone is welcome...the more the merrier!
It has been a great start to the school year! The kids are all settling nicely and are learning the routines. We have seen tears in the morning from some of our students as they say goodbye to their parents. Once they are busy in the classroom, these tears quickly turn to smiles and inquiring minds. As a parent, it's hard not to worry about our little ones but please don't worry! They are in good hands! We promise to love and nurture all of them as if they are our own.
We have our snack times and lunch time all sorted out and no one has mistakenly eaten their sandwich for breakfast!! Just a reminder to ensure that no nut products come to school or anything that contains sesame seeds. We have a severe allergy to nuts and sesame seeds in the classroom. The students have been busy so far with discovering and exploring the different centres and activities in the classroom. We are all working on collaborating with our classmates and spreading kindness in the school. Reminders: With the cooler temperatures in the morning, please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately. We stay outside for outdoor learning first thing in the mornings so a thin sweater or hoodie will keep them warm. The children have done a great job self regulating at snack time. When they hear their tummy rumbling, they have done a fabulous job eating a healthy snack in the morning. No one has eaten their sandwich at snacktime...yet!!! Please ensure all food coming to school is nut-free. Please send in a change of clothes for your child to keep in their cubby in case of an accident (pants, underwear, shirt and socks). Accidents do happen in Kindergarten so it's important to have a spare set just in case! Family Photos Needed - Please make sure to send in 2 copies of your family photo so we can add them to our family wall and our photo album in the safe place. Please make sure to put your child's name on the back of the photo. If you have a question or note, please put it in the communication book. Keep the book open so we know there's a note for us. If the book is closed, we will not see the note. Please make sure to follow our class on Twitter ( @k3kinders117 ) to see what we are learning in room 117. Bienvenue a la maternelle! Welcome to Kindergarten!
